But what was the point of buying a house so far from Home? It was irresistible; he couldn’t help himself.
It all started with a party. One of those colleague get-togethers—barbecues featuring various types of sausages and rivers of beer—held not far from the North Sea dunes. It was windy, and the house was open.
As soon as he stepped inside, Andrea caught that scent. Everyone called it just that: “the hut” at Mondello, in Sicily. Can you picture it? A wooden beach cabin. That unmistakable blend of smells: semi-rotted wood, wet sand, dampness, cool air, mildewed canvas, fresh paint, ham sandwiches, wet swimsuits, and plenty of sex. He was young—very young—but he knew that inside, women would change out of their swimsuits and stand naked. And perhaps people even made love in there. His imagination ran wild. Even though Andrea was small—too small. But there were the swimsuits—two-piece sets—left there to dry, or perhaps just to keep them from getting sandy if they fell on the floor.
Was Andrea a budding fetishist?
Perhaps.
The very next day, he set his mind on buying a wooden house on a North Sea beach—so far from Home. There was no dissuading him.
